Terry Wolverton received her nonprofit management training from the Grantsmanship Center in 1981 and, in 1985, from the Fundraising School, then-based in San Francisco. Between 1984 and 1988 she served as the Development Director for the Woman's Building, a multidisciplinary arts center, during which time the budget of the institution doubled, and from 1988-1989 served as that organization's Executive Director.
She founded Consult'Her in 1982 to provide management consulting services to nonprofit organizations and small businesses. In over twenty years of operation, Wolverton has built a diverse practice that includes long-range and strategic planning, marketing, board development, staff development and human relations issues, executive search, executive and life coaching, conflict resolution, program development, project evaluation, fundraising strategy, and facilitation of group meetings and retreats.
Her clients have included arts organizations in a multitude of disciplines, including Cornerstone Theater, Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Venice Arts Mecca, and Heidi Duckler Dance Theater. She has also worked with social service agencies such as the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and Affordable Housing Services, and with small businesses and trade organizations including Advertising Photographers of America, Lee Draper Consulting, and Leslie Stone Associates. She has additionally provided management assistance to local arts organizations under contract to the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
In recent years, she has expanded her client base to include more public policy projects and consultation to funders. In 2002, she completed work with the Los Angeles County Arts Commission on a Regional Blueprint for Arts Education within the County and has continued to consult on aspects of the Blueprint's implementation. She also worked with the Jewish Community Foundation on its one-day conference The Special Role of the Independent Funder: Strategies for Funding Programs in the Arts. She recently completed an evaluation of a three-year Visual Arts Initiative funded by the California Community Foundation, and a program evaluation of the Los Angeles County Arts Commission's Arts Leadership Initiative.
In 2009-2010, she worked with the California Arts Council to develop a strategic plan. In 2010-2011, she worked with the City of Pomona Arts and Cultural Commission to develop a Cultural Plan for the city; the City Council approved it unanimously.
In 2016, she was lead consultant on a team to develop a series of recommendations about equity and inclusion in the arts to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
In 1987, she participated in a three-month process to develop the content of and then wrote CREATING A DIFFERENCE: AN EVALUATION HANDBOOK OF ARTISTS IN EDUCATION, an evaluation handbook for the California Arts Council (Performing Tree, Los Angeles.)
Terry has also frequently served as a panelist for the grants programs of the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, the City of Pasadena Arts Division, the City of Santa Monica and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
